With widespread opinions on the gangrape in Delhi, everyone
has a status update on facebook regarding their opinions on the matter. Why?
There are really a very few people who actually mean it. Just because an issue
has got socially trendified doesn’t mean that its necessary to post an update
regarding it. What troubles me the most
is that since this horrific incident happened in the nation’s capital, it has
got the amount of publicity that rivals even that of an India- Pakistan cricket
series.. But what about the hundreds of other cases in our country where women
have been abused brutally?? I open the newspaper in the morning and every other
page screams of rapes, acid attacks, female feoticide and what not. And not to mention the scores of domestic
abuse cases which do not even get reported because our society believes that a
woman is supposed to adjust with these small homely “trifles”. They talk about
clothing the women in Pardah. I ask them why?? Do they even know how many of
those women sexually abused were actually dressed provocatively? And who are
they to decide?? When the Indian constitution was drafted 55 years before, all
the people in this country irrespective of their gender were given a right to
make their own decisions. I am not writing this to say what should be done. Is
capital punishment adequate retribution for the actions of the accused?
Shouldn’t the fingers be raised towards the men committing the crimes instead
of debates being conducted on the women’s sense of clothing? I am not the one
to comment on these. I am not ashamed to say that I don’t have an opinion on
these. I don’t want to be the light bearer who will change this society. I am
not the idealist who wants to uplift the poor and redeem them. Yes, these lofty
ideas are noble but since I am not prepared to take the steps to implement them
so I do not believe in saying that they should be done even though I believe in
them. However I do not believe in changing my facebook dp,my status message or
lighting a candle in front of my house to support my beliefs. Justice needs to
be done and done quickly. But not for just one high profile case. Justice needs
to be done to every woman out there who has asked for it. And I mean who has
asked for it. Because the person who cannot help themselves despite having the
resources to do so, cannot actually be helped.
